What is breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty)?
Many women with disproportionately large breasts suffer physically due to the excessive weight, causing back, neck, and shoulder pain. A breast reduction procedure, also known as reduction mammoplasty, reduces the size of large breasts, removing excess breast tissue and lifting the breasts. The results of breast reduction surgery are seen immediately.
Dr. Alan Serure is a premier plastic surgeon with experience performing thousands of breast procedures, including breast reduction surgeries in his exclusive practice in Miami. Your cosmetic aesthetic goals and personalized treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Serure and his staff.
Who are good candidates for a breast reduction?
Below are some conditions that usually indicate you have disproportionately large breasts and should consider reduction surgery:
- The nipples and areola point downwards
- Skin irritation occurs beneath the breasts
- The breasts are noticeably larger in proportion to your body frame
- One breast may be larger than the other, requiring correction for symmetry
- Bra strap indentations occur on the shoulders, causing deep shoulder grooves
- Breasts may pose a problem with posture and possibly cause back, neck, and should pain
Patients undergoing breast reduction surgery should be in optimal physical condition prior to the procedure and have stable bodyweight. Patients over 40 years of age must obtain a baseline mammogram.
If you are unsure whether breast reduction is the right procedure for you, Dr. Serure will provide an assessment and discuss other options.
What is a breast reduction procedure like for patients in Miami?
A breast reduction is usually an outpatient procedure and is performed at Dr. Serure’s South Miami Center for Advanced Surgery, our state-of-the-art operating facility in Miami. For added convenience, patients may choose to stay overnight under the care of a certified registered recovery nurse and an aid.
All of Dr. Serure’s patients in Miami are provided with pre-surgical instructions to help them prepare for the procedure. Our board-certified MD anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia.
The technique that Dr. Serure will employ depends on the breast size, skin laxity, and degree of sagging. Options are an incision hidden around the areola, a lollipop incision, or inverted “T” anchor incision. All choices and options will be discussed during your preoperative consultation with Dr. Serure. Breast tissue will be removed, and skin will be tightened, lifting and reducing breast size. Often fullness in the armpit axillary area will be addressed with liposuction to further narrow the silhouette of the breast.
What is the recovery for a breast reduction procedure?
Patients are able to go home following a breast reduction. They can expect to see swelling around the breast area that will gradually subside. Scars are permanent, but will usually fade and become less visible over time.
Patients may resume normal day-to-day activities within 3 or 7 days, however strenuous physical activities are restricted for 4 weeks following the procedure.
Dr. Serure will prepare a patient care plan for optimal healing following breast reduction. Results of breast reduction surgery should be permanent although weight loss, weight gain, and hormonal changes often alter breast size.
